Bromus cincinnatus (Poaceae): perennial oat-grass or annual brome-grass?

نویسندگان

چکیده

A former lectotype for Bromus cincinnatus Ten. (Poaceae) has been superseded, as it is in serious conflict with the protologue. Another element of protologue designated effective lectotype. The new identified coespecific intermedius Guss., a Mediterranean species L. subg. Bromus. combination Helictochloa panormitana (Lojac.) Romero Zarco proposed originally described Avena australis Parl., nom. illeg., which currently known cincinnata auct. lectotypes Lojac., opulenta and Guss. are also designated.

Polyphenol oxidase activity in the roots of seedlings of Bromus (Poaceae) and other grass genera.

UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Phenolic compounds exuded by roots have been implicated in allelopathic interactions among plants. Root enzymes that destroy phenolics may protect plants against allelopathic inhibition and thus may aid in invasiveness. Phenolic-degrading enzymes are chiefly found in aboveground plant parts, but have also been previously reported in root tissues where the enzy...

Predicting adaptive evolution under elevated atmospheric CO2 in the perennial grass Bromus erectus

Increasing concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere are likely to affect the ecological dynamics of plant populations and communities worldwide, yet little is known about potential evolutionary consequences of high CO2. We employed a quantitative genetic framework to examine how the expression of genetic variation and covariation in fitnessrelated traits, and thus, the evolutionary potential of ...

The Grass Seed Pathogen Pyrenophora Semeniperda as a Biocontrol Agent for Annual Brome Grasses

Pyrenophora semeniperda’s current reported distribution worldwide is mainly temperate grasslands and winter cereal growing regions. Previous reports in Europe and Asia were not known, and strong doubt has been expressed that it occurs in the Old World. However, it has been discovered in Turkey and Greece. Using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) for genetic identification, P. semeniperda’s exist...

The ghost of outcrossing past in downy brome, an inbreeding annual grass.

We investigated the frequency of outcrossing in downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.), a cleistogamous weedy annual grass, in both common garden and wild populations, using microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers. In the common garden study, 25 lines with strongly contrasting genotypes were planted in close proximity. We fingerprinted 10 seed progeny from 8 individuals of each...

California annual grass invaders: the drivers or passengers of change?

The dominance of invasive species is often assumed to reflect their competitive superiority over displaced native species. However, invasive species may be abundant because of their greater tolerance to anthropogenic impacts accompanying their introduction. Thus, invasive species can either be the drivers or passengers of change. We distinguish between these two possibilities in California grass...
